The API, expected to be widely available in June, will enable posting through apps such as Hootsuite and Sprinklr.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is making progress with its Threads API, although it will still take some time before it becomes widely available to developers. According to Meta engineer Jesse Chen, the company has started testing its new developer tools with a select group of companies. Chen’s announcement was shared in a post on Threads, which was first reported by TechCrunch. The API is currently in beta, but Meta plans to roll it out more broadly by the end of June.
The initial companies participating in the beta testing of the Threads API include social media management platforms Sprinklr, Hootsuite, Social News Desk, and Sprout Social. Meta is also collaborating with tech news aggregator Techmeme and live video platform Grabyo. Initially, the API will primarily enable these services to publish content to Threads. However, Chen mentioned that there are plans to incorporate reply moderation and insights capabilities in the future.
The introduction of the Threads API could attract more publishers and power users to the platform. Many publishers and brands rely on third-party software for posting and analytics, and an API would provide them with professional-level tools. This move aligns with Meta’s aim to position Threads as a viable alternative to other social media platforms.
Moreover, having an API could potentially support Meta’s plans for interoperability with Mastodon and the rest of the fediverse. While Meta hasn’t publicly discussed this aspect of the API, it could facilitate integration with other decentralized social media platforms.
