In order to experience those speeds, you must have a device that is compatible with SD Express.
Samsung’s upcoming microSD card is set to offer a significant speed boost compared to currently available options. The company’s 256GB SD Express microSD, which is their first SD Express card, can read data at speeds of up to 800 MB/s. This is considerably faster than the microSD cards available on the market today. However, the price of the card has not yet been announced, and it will not be available until later this year.
The 256GB SD Express microSD is expected to have sequential read speeds of up to 800 MB/s, making it more than 2.5 times faster than UHS-II microSD cards and 1.4 times faster than SATA SSDs. This means that Samsung’s new card should outperform even the cheapest solid-state drives.
To ensure stable performance and reliability, Samsung has incorporated Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology into the SD Express microSD card. This technology helps maintain optimum temperature levels, even during extended usage sessions.
Samsung has also emphasized the card’s compatibility with mobile computing and on-device AI. While the company’s current high-end phones do not have a microSD slot, future AI-powered devices could benefit from the increased speeds. However, the full potential of the SD Express card will only be realized when new devices that support SD Express become available.
In addition to the SD Express card, Samsung has also announced a new 1TB microSD with UHS-1 speeds. This card features eight layers of Samsung’s 8th generation 1-terabit (Tb) V-NAND, making it possible to achieve the high capacity that was previously only available in SSDs. The 1TB card is also designed to withstand water, extreme temperatures, drops, X-rays, and magnets.
The 256GB SD Express microSD card is set to launch later this year, while the 1TB UHS-1 microSD card will be available in the third quarter of 2024. The pricing for both cards has not been disclosed yet.
