Kia has officially launched its upcoming electric vehicle, the EV5, at its EV day event. The automaker also unveiled two new concepts aimed at making electric vehicle technology more accessible. The company’s goal is to provide a wide range of electric vehicles, including the EV6 and the newer EV9, which offers Level 3 autonomy and a 336-mile range. Kia plans to sell the EV5, as well as the future EV4 and EV3, at prices ranging from $35,000 to $50,000 in order to promote the widespread adoption of EVs. The EV5 SUV is Kia’s third purely electric vehicle and is built on the E-GMP platform, Kia’s dedicated EV platform. The EV5 will initially be manufactured and sold in China and Korea, with variations in specifications for each market. The Chinese models will include a standard version with a 64kWh battery pack and a 160kW motor, offering a range of 530 km or 329 miles. The long-range variant will have a bigger battery, providing a range of 720 km or 447 miles on a single charge. The AWD model will offer a range of 650 km or 404 miles and will feature fast-charging capabilities. The Korean models will have tailored ranges based on market demands, and Kia also plans to unveil a GT variant with performance features in the future.
While the EV5 is a real product that will be available for sale in China later this year, the EV4 and EV3 are still concepts. The EV3 is envisioned as a compact and accessible version of the EV9, while the EV4 will be a sedan with a low nose, sharp lines, and a futuristic cocoon-like interior. It remains to be seen if Kia can achieve its target price point of $35,000 for any of these vehicles, as this is a common goal among EV makers.
