‘They may exhibit ‘minor cosmetic imperfections’ but are backed by a one-year warranty.’
Valve, the popular gaming company, has recently introduced “certified refurbished” units of its Steam Deck. These renewed devices are being offered at a discounted price, around 20% cheaper than the Steam Summer Sale prices. Despite being refurbished, these consoles come with the same one-year warranty as the new models. In an exciting development, Valve has partnered with GameStop, allowing the retailer to sell Steam Deck refurbs in select stores. However, it is important to note that GameStop’s refurbs are handled at their own facilities and come with a separate warranty.
As of now, Valve has all three tiers of the Steam Deck in stock. The 64GB model is priced at $319, the 256GB variant at $419, and the 512GB version at $519. In comparison, the brand-new units are priced at $399, $529, and $649 respectively.
Valve ensures that each refurbished unit undergoes a rigorous testing process before being certified for resale. The company conducts over 100 tests at its facilities, including checks for controller inputs, audio systems, screens, internals, and battery health. While the renewed units may have minor cosmetic blemishes, Valve guarantees a reliable and high-quality gaming experience at a reduced cost. In addition to the warranty, the refurbished models come with a power supply (also refurbished), carrying case, and quick-start guide. Valve warns that the stock of refurbished Steam Decks is limited and may vary over time, advising interested buyers to regularly check for availability if they are sold out.
Furthermore, GameStop is also offering refurbished Steam Decks at select retail locations. These units are priced up to 20% lower than the new models but are exclusively available to customers with a GameStop Pro membership, which costs $25 annually.
Overall, this move by Valve to offer certified refurbished Steam Decks provides gamers with an opportunity to acquire these devices at a more affordable price point. The collaboration with GameStop expands the availability of refurbished units, albeit with certain membership restrictions. As the stock is limited, interested buyers are encouraged to act promptly to secure their refurbished Steam Deck.
