‘Experience a wide range of premium features at an unbeatable starting price of just $35,000.’

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, car manufacturers are introducing a range of electric SUVs. However, there is a lack of options for those seeking a smaller vehicle. Volvo aims to address this gap with the upcoming EX30, a compact electric SUV that offers premium features at an affordable price. Having had the opportunity to see the EX30 in person during its North American debut, it is evident that the market needs more electric vehicles like this.

The base model of the EX30 is expected to be released in the summer of 2024, with a starting price of just $35,000. This version will feature a single-motor setup and offer a range of approximately 275 miles. While this price may be slightly higher than gas-powered alternatives such as the Honda CR-V or Subaru Crosstrek, it is important to consider that the average cost of a new electric vehicle is over $53,000. Volvo’s EX30 is making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.

Moreover, the base EX30 model comes well-equipped with a variety of features. These include a 12.3-inch touchscreen powered by Android Automotive, support for wireless Apple CarPlay, cyclist detection, Pilot Assist, and rear passenger detection. Volvo has also designed the interior with a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic, using a range of recycled and sustainable materials. Although some may have reservations about certain components, such as the speckled panels on the dash, I believe they complement the car’s sleek modern design.

For those willing to spend a bit more, the EX30 offers an upgraded dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. This version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it faster than larger and pricier electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y Performance. In fact, it holds the title of being the fastest Volvo ever produced, across both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.

The EX30 provides a spacious front interior, with Volvo opting for a soundbar that runs the width of the windshield instead of separate speakers. The company has also streamlined the interior by relocating common controls, such as window controls, to the center console. Storage has been given particular attention, with the EX30 featuring convenient cubby holes, a center-mounted glove box, and a dishwasher-safe removable tray with an adorable moose graphic for rear seat passengers. Additionally, the car offers ample power options for devices, including two USB-C ports in the front, two in the back, and a built-in dual phone wireless charging pad between the driver and passenger seats.

In terms of rear seating, the EX30 is slightly more compact compared to the Chevy Bolt, resulting in a slightly tighter space. However, this is expected given the vehicle’s smaller dimensions. As someone who is six feet tall, I found the legroom to be limited when the front seats are pushed back. On the other hand, the trunk offers a surprising amount of cargo space, measuring at 31.9 cubic feet when including the extra room underneath the load flat floor.

While I have yet to test drive the EX30, it appears to offer an appealing combination of premium features, decent range, and compact size. Its performance is also commendable, albeit at a higher cost. As a city dweller, the EX30 seems like an ideal electric SUV for navigating urban streets and parking. This is a quality that is lacking in many electric SUVs, and we need more options like the EX30.

Reservations for the EX30 in the U.S. are currently open, requiring a refundable deposit of $500. The vehicle is expected to arrive at dealerships in the summer of next year.
