‘Next month will see the arrival of one of the pioneering laptops featuring this new chipset.’
AMD has introduced its inaugural mobile gaming processor featuring 3D V-Cache technology. This innovation allows AMD to stack additional cache on top of the CPU, increasing its capacity. The technology was initially implemented in desktop processors last year, and now it will be available in laptops as well.
By utilizing this approach, AMD can incorporate an additional 64MB of L3 cache into the Ryzen 9 7945X3D, resulting in a total of 144MB. This helps minimize the possibility of cache misses, which occur when the system fails to find the desired information in the cache and has to retrieve it from the system memory. AMD claims that this can lead to processes taking up to 10 times longer to execute. The company believes that its 3D V-Cache technology can enhance gaming performance by increasing frame rates.
Unlike the traditional method of expanding cache horizontally on a CPU’s 2D plane, AMD’s vertical approach allows for a larger cache size without increasing the chip’s width or length. Consequently, the company can extract more performance from the CPU without occupying additional horizontal space on the motherboard.
AMD asserts that this is the fastest mobile gaming processor available, surpassing the Ryzen 9 7945HX by over 15% on average. The processor boasts 16 cores, 32 threads, boost speeds of up to 5.4 GHz, and a TDP of 55W+. It is built on the Zen 4 architecture.
The wait for laptops equipped with the Ryzen 9 7945X3D won’t be long, as the ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D will be released on August 22nd.
